"Every part of the neuron from soma to synapse changes in response to the stimulation it receives . . . Systematic changes in the levels of activity of neurons or networks of neurons have been observed to occur following Stimulation Induced Neural Activation (SINA), an umbrella term that covers diverse forms of stimulation." - Harold L. Russell., PhD (from Intellectual, Auditory and Photic Stimulation And Changes in Functioning In Children and Adults)
Using the power of subsonic sound and sophisticated neuroacoustic technology, Metanoia gently and deeply encourages the brain and nervous system to shift to higher levels of functioning: new dendritic growth, new neural pathways, new synaptic connections, and the normalization of neurotransmitters. Used as a meditative adjunct or as part of a holistic or integral approach to personal, cultural, and social development, Metanoia can assist in making significant increases in personal peace and effectiveness, ability to handle stressful situations, accelerated learning, empathy, inuition, creativity, emotional intelligence, self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-actualization. The Meaning of Metanoia "In Carl Jung's psychology, metanoia indicates a spontaneous attempt of the psyche to heal itself of unbearable conflict by melting down and then being reborn in a more adaptive form [emphasis added]."
". . . Maurice Nicoll in his book The Mark (Vincent Stuart, London, 1954) has written that metanoia, as mentioned in the Gospels, refers not to repentance but to a transformation of the mind, a new way of thinking, new ideas, new knowledge, and a completely new approach to everything in life [emphasis added]."

Metanoia's Advanced NeuroAcoustic Technology • Binaural Stimulation: Using strategic carrier frequencies, Metanoia employs binaural tones in a precise manner to progressively enliven the brain and nervous system to refashion and shift to higher levels of functioning.
• Isochronic Tones: Layered in harmonic relationship to the binaural tones (at a specific volume level, so as not to interfere with the binaural signals); evokes a greater cortical response, and therefore entrainment, than binaural signals alone.
• Monaural Tones: Layered in harmonic relationship to the isochronic tones (at a specific volume level, so as not to interfere with the isochronic signals); evokes a greater cortical response, and therefore entrainment, than binaural signals alone.
• Filtered Sound: By cross-feeding, auto-panning, and modulating pitch and low pass filter, every sound in the soundtrack (rain, thunderstorm, and wind) emits an entrainment pulse perfectly synchronized with every other entrainment signal, thus creating subtle but powerful synergy.
• Binaural Mixing: The soothing rain you here in the background has been specially mixed to create binaural signals embedded into the very rain sounds themselves; in other words, this method of entrainment is virtually imperceptible because, unlike conventional binaural tones, its varying signals are not perceived by the conscious mind. Nonetheless, the synergistic entrainment effect with which this method impacts the brain is undeniably profound.
• Separate Hemispheric Stimulation: While most of the signals in this program induce hemispheric synchronization, a short section of the program is dedicated to stimulating the left hemisphere with gamma-band signals. Dr. Richard Davidson’s research on hemispheric asymmetry (which included extensive work with meditating Tibetan Buddhist monks) has repeatedly correlated negative emotions with excessive stimulation in the right prefrontal cortex. Likewise, his research correlated intense joyful feelings with gamma-band activity in the left prefrontal cortex.
• High Frequency Therapy: Alfred Tomatis’ extensive research on the mechanisms of hearing have revealed that certain ultra-high frequencies have a charging affect upon the brain and body. After approximately 100 hours of listening to these specific frequencies, various benefits have been reported: significant decreases in the need for sleep, higher energy, relief from tinnitus, accelerated learning, relief from dyslexia, and improved emotional wellbeing.
Strategic Brainwave Patterns Utilized in the Metanoia Meditation • Mu (transition between Alpha and Theta) – Predominant in Transcendental Meditation; theorized as a “junction-point” or “window” to the undifferentiated, unified field of consciousness that underlies waking, dreaming, and sleeping; profound relaxation; emergent, hallucinatory, dreamlike experiences; corresponds with the Schumann Resonance, which is reported to be the average frequency at which the earth’s magnetic field oscillates.
• Low Theta - Hypnogogic state; creative inspiration; insight/problem solving; deep meditation; learning and memory.
• Delta – Profound meditation and insight; formless/expansive awareness; healing and recuperation; deep relaxation; empathy; experience of transcending time and space.
Empirical studies have shown that as Delta waves increase, cortisol--age-accelerating, stress-related hormone--decreases and the levels of DHEA--which has anti-aging properties--and Melantonin--a hormone which decreases dramatically with age--both significantly increase. Growth hormone has also been found to increase signficantly with increases in Delta activity.
• Alpha – Accelerated learning; relaxed alertness; Zen meditation; open focus; nonlinear mental activity; stimulates the release of serotonin (vital in the regulation of mood and sleep); appears with Delta during reported episodes of “witnessed sleep” (often reported by long-term meditators as the experience of identifying with the substrate consciousness that underlies all temporal states, even when the body and mind recede into the deep sleep stage). • Gamma – Higher levels of brain organization; possesses a binding action noticeably absent in schizophrenic patients; above average integration of sensory information; hypnotic states; enhanced self awareness and insight; deep meditation; a sense of connection with the surrounding world; deepened compassion and loving kindness; clarity of mind. These brain waves are suppressed totally by anesthetic, which means they deeply influence waking consciousness and perception. Found in all parts of the brain, and are most prominent in highly developed practitioners of Tibetan Buddhist compassion meditation (metta) practice. The Metanoia Meditation System also employs Gamma stimulation of the left hemisphere, as such activity has been empirically correlated with increased intuitive knowing (see Gamma Band Eeg And Unconscious Target Detection In A Psi Task). | Brainwave Entrainment, Meditation, and Adult Development by Eric Thompson
Brainwave entrainment refers to the frequency following response that occurs within the brain in response to the frequency or cyclic speed of a specific audio signal. There are numerous methods of entraining brainwaves but one of the more popular means is referred to as binaural beat frequencies. When two similar but slightly different tones are delivered to the brain, one to the right ear and the other to the left ear, it is believed that the superior olivary nucleus in the temporal lobe of each hemisphere perceives the difference between the two tones and hears in their stead a single tone which is actually the difference between the two ( continued).

Alpha & Theta Rhythms in Second Language Translation Processing
by Eric W Thompson Researchers have recently uncovered specific brainwave activity believed to be involved in the language translation process.
The following rhythmic occurences were seen to be crucial:
1) Higher Theta event-related synchronization in the parietal area during translation of low-frequency words 2) Higher Alpha 2 event-related synchronization in the frontal lobes during translation of low-frequency words
3) Stronger Alpha 1 event-related desynchronization as the result of a successfully (as opposed to an unsuccessfully) translated low frequency word
4) Stronger Alpha 2 event-related desynchronization in the left neocortex as the result of a successfully (as opposed to an unsuccessfully) translated low frequency word
Applications in Brainwave Entrainment
~ Theta synchronization in the parietal lobes (during study of foreign languages)
~ Alpha 2 synchronization in the frontal lobes (during study of foreign languages)
Metanoia will be featuring a Student Excellence series of entrainment programs which will incorporate these findings. Look for this release in June of 2008.
